A black-tile primary bath and the bedroom beside it: the two rooms we built to show what we mean by finished
Built in Dennis Skoro's own home and photographed for Portland-area design publications. A freestanding tub against floor-to-ceiling black tile with a glass shower and brass fixtures, and a bedroom wrapped in a walnut slat wall. Every detail here is one we now specify for clients.

A contractor's own bathroom tells you what they actually believe.
When there is no client to answer to, you build what you think is right. This suite is where we tried things before recommending them: the shower waterproofing system we now specify on every job, in-floor heat zoned separately from the bedroom, layered lighting that runs on one scene at night, and the storage that keeps a bathroom looking like the photographs a year later.
It is also the room we walk clients through when words are not enough. Tile layout, grout width, niche placement, how a curbless shower drains: it is easier to stand in it.
The walnut wall does the work.
A full-height walnut slat wall behind a platform bed, integrated sconces instead of table lamps, and a door straight through to the bath. Sound insulation in the shared wall and every light on a dimmer: the details that never show in a listing photo and that you notice every night.

Layout & framing
Bath enlarged into adjacent closet space; new partitions; recessed niches and pocket framing for window treatments
Plumbing
Relocated supply and drains; glass-enclosed shower on pebble tile; freestanding tub with floor-mounted filler
Electrical & lighting
Layered lighting on dimmers and scenes; in-floor heat, separately zoned; ventilation on humidity control
Waterproofing & tile
Bonded membrane system, flood-tested; large-format tile, aligned layout, matched grout
Cabinetry & stone
Custom vanity with drawer storage sized to what actually lives in it; brass fixtures throughout
Bedroom finish
Sound insulation, solid-core doors, hardwood, trim and paint; built-in closet fit-out
